Croatian police said on Tuesday that they have filed charges against two unnamed men, members of a special police unit of the Serbian Autonomous Region of Krajina, a wartime Serb rebel statelet in Croatia, for killing Russian reporters Viktor Nogin and Gennadiy Kurinnoy in September 1991.

Croatian police said on Tuesday that they have charged an unnamed 62-year-old former Serb paramilitary with committing a war crime in the village of Petrovci in eastern Croatia in November 1991.

"On February 15, 2021, the police filed a criminal charge against the 62-year-old suspect at the relevant County State's Attorney's Office in Osijek," a police statement said.

"One month ago, they caught me trying to cross to Croatia on foot and sent me back to Serbia, from where I crossed to Romania," said one of the Afghans, who declined to give his name.

Speaking in a corridor strewn with rubbish, the man said he had been assaulted by Croatian police. Serbia and Romania, on the other hand, "are good," he told BIRN.

Croatia's Interior Minister, Davor Bozinovic, condemned a failed visit by a group of Italian MEPs to the Croatia-Bosnia border as having "the obvious intention to damage Croatia's reputation".

Croatian police said on Wednesday that they have charged four unnamed Croatian citizens with committing war crimes against civilians and prisoners of war in Dalj, a village in eastern Croatia, some 20 kilometres from the wartime flashpoint town of Vukovar.

Croatian police said on Tuesday that they have filed a criminal charge accusing an unnamed 73-year-old Croatian citizen of committing a war crime by killing a civilian in the village of Darda in eastern Croatia in March 1992.

A minister in a Bosnian canton bordering Croatia said the EU member state had forcibly returned over 7,000 migrants and refugees to Bosnia last year, asking why his own country had not done the same to its neighbours.

A search for survivors in Croatia stretched into the night on Dec. 29 after a powerful earthquake killed at least seven people in the country's interior, tearing down rooftops and piling bricks in the streets.

The international rights watchdog Amnesty International on Thursday described "a horrifying escalation of police human rights violations at the Croatian border with Bosnia", when it said that "a group of migrants and asylum seekers was recently bound, brutally beaten and tortured by officers who mocked their injuries and smeared food on their bleeding heads to humiliate them".

Human rights organisations have accused the Croatian Ministry of Interior of resorting to slurs, after it rejected media reports of police tagging migrants and refugees who attempted to enter Croatia from Bosnia with paint.
