BELGRADE - A Montenegro prosecutor received parliamentary approval yesterday to strip immunity from two opposition leaders who are targeted in the investigation of an alleged coup attempt on 16 October, when general elections were held in the Balkan country.

The civic movement URA on called for an urgent meeting of all opposition parties after a parliamentary committee approved a request to lift the immunity of two opposition leaders suspected of being involved in the alleged coup attempt on election day in October.

Several anti-NATO opposition parties are to endorse businessman Miodrag Daka Davidovic as the leader of a joint electoral list to challenge the pro-Western ruling Democratic Party of Socialists of former Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic at local polls in Niksic on March 12.

A group of pro-Russian opposition parties and an anti-NATO organisation in Montenegro are demanding a referendum on NATO membership as the date for when parliament is expected to vote on the issue looms.

Montenegro opposition leaders on Wednesday presented the investment potential of their small Adriatic country at a meeting in Grozny with the speaker of the Chechen parliament, Magomed Daudov.

In a statement released Thursday Montenegro's opposition — made up of a coalition of parties — slammed the court's decision and said that proved that the alleged "coup" was staged by the authorities to ensure Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, won the October 16 general election.

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Monday that he would meet leaders of the pro-Serbian opposition in Montenegro, even though some of them have been accused of being involved in a plot to overthrow his Montenegrin counterpart Milo Djukanovic.

The opposition Democratic Front is planning a new round of demonstrations from December aimed at forcing out the party of outgoing Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, which has held power since 1991.

Montenegro's main opposition alliance, the Democratic Front, on Monday called on the prosecution to reveal which political structures and politicians collaborated with Russian nationalists in an alleged plot to overthrow Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic.
