General Military Hospital

A wave of senior officer dismissals has highlighted long-standing issues in Greece's military healthcare system.

The leadership of the Greek Armed Forces Health Service and the managers of two military hospitals were removed from their positions on Tuesday, following a meeting of the Council of Chiefs of General Staff (SAGE) to discuss an overhaul of the military's health facilities.

Minister of Defense Nikos Dendias asked the head of the Greek Armed Forces to conduct a full review of the management of military hospitals after two patients revealed they had received months-long delayed cancer diagnosis at the same health facility. 

A 65-year-old retired colonel has testified as a witness in the case of a 55-year-old police officer, who had been admitted to the 424 General Military Hospital in Thessaloniki for an appendectomy but was not informed of a cancer diagnosis until one year later.

It was announced Monday that the Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS) will set up a mobile emergency medical unit in the parking lot of the 424 General Military Hospital in Thessaloniki, northern Greece.

The unit will not provide ICU-level support. It's creation is part of restructuring to create more room for Covid-19 patients inside the main hospital building.
