Man seriously injured after being crushed by a tree

A 47-year-old man was left unconscious on Thursday when a tree fell on him in the Athenian suburb of Papagou, news reports said.

The incident happened at the corner of Ionias and Argyrokastrou Streets while a crew was attempting to cut down the tree. It was not clear if the man was part of the crew or a passerby. 

An ambulance transported him to Gennimatas hospital. 

Student and principal attacked at Athens school

A 19-year-old male has been taken into custody after an attack on a student and the principal at a school in the downtown Athens district of Patissia on Tuesday morning.

The suspect allegedly barged into the school campus carrying a hammer, which he used to strike the 17-year-old student, and a knife with which he stabbed the school principal when he intervened.

Three people injured in shooting outside Athens nightclub

Three people have been hospitalized after receiving injuries in a shooting outside a nightclub in central Athens.

The shooting occurred shortly before 7 a.m. outside a club on Iakchou Street in Gazi.

According to ERT, a vehicle SUV with no number plates pulled up outside the venue and a passenger opened fire.

Communist Party leader briefly hospitalized for respiratory infection

Communist Party leader Dimitris Koutsoumbas was briefly hospitalized on Thursday due to a respiratory infection that has been affecting him for the past few days, Greek media reported.

His health problem is not serious but he will not attend a debate in Parliament over the government's handling of the ongoing wildfires in Greece.

Seven children test positive for strep A infection

Seven children from the same northern city as a boy who died after contracting strep A have tested positive for the infection, according to the president of the public hospital staff union POEDIN.

A prosecutor has already ordered an inquiry into the death of the 7-year-old boy from Naoussa, which occurred in a Thessaloniki hospital.
