Meimarakis appointed to European People’s Party Task Force

Greek MEP and former New Democracy leader Vangelis Meimarakis has been appointed as his party's representative on the European People's Party (EPP) Task Force.

The Task Force, which includes senior EPP officials and members of the Wilfried Martens Center for European Studies, will draft the EPP's manifesto.

As reported by Politico, Metsola aimed to cleanse the European Parliament’s image, which had been tarnished by successive scandals. In response to Qatargate in 2022, which involved Greek MEP Eva Kaili accused of accepting cash from the Qatari government to exert influence, Metsola decided that greater transparency was the best way to combat corruption.

EPPO drops charges against MEP Maria Spyraki in fraud case

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has decided to dismiss its proceedings against Greek MEP Maria Spyraki, in a case of suspected fraud in relation to the management of the parliamentary allowance, and in particular concerning the remuneration of Accredited Parliamentary Assistants.

MEP Kyrtsos’ immunity lifted

A plenary session of the European Parliament has voted in favor of lifting the immunity of Greek MEP Giorgos Kyrtsos, a member of the Renew Europe political grouping, following a request by the Athens Prosecutor's Office.

The request for the waiver of Kyrtsos' immunity was forwarded by the deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court in a letter dated to June 27, 2023.

Kaili to seek to return to MEP duties, lawyer says

Greek MEP Eva Kaili, one the main suspects in a cash-for-influence corruption probe at the European Parliament, will seek to return to her parliamentary duties next week, her lawyer has said.

On Thursday, Belgian authorities announced that Kaili was no longer under house arrest and was not required to wear an ankle bracelet.
