Hundreds of free tickets made available to unemployed playgoers by the Greek National Opera for the dress rehearsal of Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" were snapped up in just a few hours, organizers said over the weekend.

Madama Butterfly | Athens | May 31 - June 7
The Greek National Opera's summer series gets under way on May 31 with Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." This is the first time in five years that the GNO's first summer production will be performed at the Herodes Atticus Theater, known locally as the Irodio, on the southwestern slope of the Acropolis.

Italy's Lorenzo Mariani directs the Greek National Opera in a production of Giuseppe Verdi's seminal "Macbeth" for the company's first appearance at its new home in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). Tassis Christoyannis performs the title role, with Petros Magoulas as Banco and Dimitria Theodosiou as Lady Macbeth. Performances start at 8 p.m.

Actor Giorgos Kimoulis is tipped to become managing director at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) on the south coast of Athens, Kathimerini understands.

Koumentakis appointed new creative director of Greek National Opera
Composer Giorgos Koumentakis was appointed new creative director of the Greek National Opera on Thursday, following a decision by Culture Minister Lydia Koniordou.
Koumentakis, formerly in charge of the company's Alternative Stage, will succeed maestro Myron Michailidis, starting on February 3.
