As authorities on Thursday were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Panathinaikos and Greece soccer player George Baldock, his family released a statement confirming his passing and requesting privacy.

The judicial official in charge of disciplinary proceedings for soccer-related offenses, Deputy Prosecutor Nikolaos Margaritis, brought proceedings against Achilleas Beos, the president of Volos soccer club. 

Police in Thessaloniki in northern Greece arrested on Monday a 21-year-old soccer player who physically assaulted and injured a referee on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the area of Halkidona at the end of an amateur league game between Filippos Eleousas and Ethnikos Meteoron.
