Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos was presented on Thursday with the annual report of the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (HDPA).

Sales of 1.5 hr e-tickets start

Commuters can buy electronic versions of the regular 1.40-euro ticket allowing access to all forms of public transport in Athens for up to 1.5 hour.

Up until Monday the ticket was only available in paper form. Paper tickets will be discontinued on November 15. Eventually commuters will be able to renew electronic 90-minute tickets at machines, as is the case now for monthly passes.

In an interview with state television on Saturday, Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis put the blame for long queues by commuters seeking to apply for the new electronic transport card on the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (HDPA) and said that the new system will be fully up and running by November 15, the date when the old paper tickets will stop being valid.

Public transport companies in the Greek capital are hoping that the approval of a long-awaited electronic ticketing system will help restore their finances to good health as it is expected to combat fare dodging, which is estimated to have led to the firms missing out on between 40 and 60 million euros each year.
