Lazaros Mavropoulos appointed new head of police

Police Lieutenant General Lazaros Mavropoulos has been appointed new chief of the Hellenic Police (ELAS) following a meeting of the National Council on National Security (KYSEA) on Saturday.

Τhe new appointment "aims to improve and implement more positively and effectively the modern operational plans of the Hellenic Police for the safety of citizens," KYSEA said in its announcement.

Police deny abuse claim

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) has vehemently denied a report doing the rounds on social media about a woman injured by officers during Wednesday's mass rally in central Athens to protest the horrific train accident on February 28 in northern Greece.

The claim on Twitter shows a woman with blood in her hair and on her face beneath the post reading, "I was hit on the head." 

More than 40,000 people marched in Athens according to the police

The Hellenic Police estimates that more than 40,000 people marched in central Athens on Wednesday to protest the rail collision at Tempe last week that left 57 people dead. Sources from the Citizen Protection Ministry also pointed out that the march was a mostly peaceful affair.

Police abuse reports

Minister of Citizens' Protection Takis Theodorikakos has ordered the immediate investigation into reports of police violence during a rally and protest march in Athens on Sunday over the deadly train accident at Tempe in central Greece last week. 

A question of credibility

Recent reports regarding corruption in the Hellenic Police (ELAS) naturally raise concern among the public. 

It is not yet possible to separate fact from fiction and whether allegations are genuine or driven by clashes between rival groups inside the force. 

Tight security put in place as royals arrive

The operational plan of the Hellenic Police (ELAS) was finalized at the weekend for the security measures on Monday, the day of the funeral of the former king Constantine. 

Police officers of all specialties were already on duty on Sunday in the center of the capital as the first representatives of royal families arrived in Athens to attend the Monday service.
