Spot checks by teams of Greek and international inspectors saw 22 beaches in different parts of Greece stripped of their Blue Flag certification on Thursday.

The results were announced Thursday by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN).

Greek beaches got a total of 497 flags, while 14 marinas and six sustainable boating tourism operators also received the distinction.

Ten Greek conservation groups on Friday issued a joint statement expressing support for the government's draft bill aimed at overhauling regulations for protected areas of natural beauty but adding that the legislation was not comprehensive enough.
