Cyprus officials identify Covid-19 variant

Cyprus' Health Ministry says that a new variant of Covid-19 has been detected among confirmed coronavirus infections on the island nation.

The ministry said on Monday the country's Institute of Neurology and Genetics identified the variant VOC 202012/01 in one of 24 samples collected from individuals who had contracted Covid-19 in the last week of December.

The coronavirus death toll rose to 10 in the Republic on Thursday after a woman, 77, who was being treated in the Limassol General Hospital ICU succumbed to the infection, while 36 new cases were confirmed.

The woman had underlying health conditions, as did eight of the 10 total deaths recorded so far.

Number of coronavirus cases on both sides of Cyprus rise to seven

Four new cases of coronavirus were confirmed on Wednesday, raising the figure to seven across the divide.

According to information received by the Health Ministry by the Institute of Neurology and Genetics that is carrying out coronavirus tests on suspected cases, tests on samples taken from four people emerged positive for the virus.
