Recent analysis by the Institute for Road Safety reveals a decline in road traffic fatalities in Bulgaria over the past three years, with 521 reported deaths in 2023 compared to 531 in 2022 and 561 in 2021. While this trend suggests a decrease in fatalities, a concerning surge in serious injuries raises alarm, escalating from 7,609 in 2021 to 9,090 in 2023.

More than 350 km of highways must be secured immediately due to the high risk of serious accidents. This is according to a report by the Institute of Road Safety. According to road experts, the institutions show systemic irresponsibility in terms of road safety in the country.

"In all likelihood, there is a human error combined with a technical malfunction, because even if the bus crashed, it should not have caught fire. Rather, people may have died in the fire rather than the crash itself."

This was commented to BNR by Bogdan Milchev from the Institute for Road Safety after the severe accident on the Struma Highway.

In one of the metropolitan shopping malls simulators will be presented for drivers of artificial intelligence vehicles. The devices were successfully used in training centers in Germany.

Over 4,000 children from 74 schools have taken part in the Road Safety Olympics, Bogdan Milchev, a member of the Management Board of the Institute for Road Safety, told Focus Radio. The project was implemented in the regions of Sofia, Stara Zagora, Pleven and Ruse, and attracted great interest, he said. 

More than 25 per cent of the car crashes in Bulgaria were due to the technical failure of the vehicles, according to an analysis of the Road Safety Institute, presented during a discussion on bad commercial practices in the market for the sale of used cars.
