Former senior officials of the Greek Police (ELAS) and current officers are set to stand trial for dereliction of duty related to the unwarranted and excessive police protection provided to journalist, TV show host, and model agent Menios Fourthiotis, who has a history of legal troubles, Kathimerini has learned.

Photographs documenting the locations where members of an extortion ring operating within the Municipality of Athens were active have been obtained and presented by protothema.gr.

In response to the recent arrest of 12 Public Health Supervisors implicated in an extortion ring, the Attica regional governor, Nikos Hardalias, has placed all involved on immediate leave. This extortion ring also included employees from the Municipal Police of Athens and the Ministry of Culture.

Three employees of the Ministry of Culture were among those involved in the activities of a ring that provided protection to shopkeepers and owners of hotels and properties for a hefty fee, which was dismantled after an investigation and a coordinated operation by the Internal Affairs Service of the Security Corps.

The “mafia” of municipal employees in Athens, which, in collaboration with private individuals, provided protection to shopkeepers in the capital, extorting them, with no compensation, had the organization and “structure” of a criminal organization, with “brains”, a “cashier”, a “collector” and a driver.
