A Hamas team arrived in Cairo on Aug. 3 for talks with Egyptian mediators on a possible truce in Gaza, an airport official and state news agency MENA said.

Israeli shells struck a U.N. school in Gaza early July 30, killing 16, as ground troops made a signficant push into the territory despite Palestinian efforts to broker a 24-hour truce.

It was the second time in a week that a U.N. school sheltering hundreds of homeless Palestinians had been hit, with the latest violence pushing the Gaza death toll over 1,260.        

The Palestinian leadership, along with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, are willing to observe a 24-hour ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip, a senior PLO official said on Tuesday.        

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas is to head a team including Hamas for talks in Cairo on sealing a Gaza ceasefire between the Islamist movement and Israel, an official said July 28.
      

A woman and a child were among three people killed in an Israeli strike on southern Gaza on Wednesday, raising the overall death toll to 208, the emergency services said.        

Two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli strike on July 11, raising the toll in four days of violence to 100, Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.
