Germany has confirmed 22,806 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, with the total count reaching 1,006,394, the Robert Koch Institute said on Friday.

Germany prolongs the coronavirus-linked restrictions until December 20, while the limitations of social contacts are likely to be in place until January, Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a press conference after the meeting with minister-presidents of federal states.

It took six months for the world to reach 10 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus. It took just over six weeks for that number to double.

The worldwide count of known COVID-19 infections climbed past 20 million on Aug. 10, with more than half of them from just three countries: the U.S., India and Brazil, according to the tally kept by Johns Hopkins University.

Turkey has made it mandatory for people to wear face masks in public in five more provinces as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, the country's health minister said early on June 16. 

Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter that wearing masks is mandatory in Diyarbakır, Erzurum, Kayseri, Rize and Şanlıurfa provinces. The mask rule is applied in 42 provinces.

The coronavirus has infected nearly two million people overall in the United States, and in the past 24 hours has caused 1,082 fatalities in the country, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University on June 10.    

The death toll in the U.S. from the novel coronavirus surpassed the 100,000 mark on May 27, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. 

The Maryland-based university counted 100,047 deaths and 1,695,776 cases.

The U.S. continues to lead in cases and deaths worldwide from the virus.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was unable to visit his mother in the weeks leading up to her death due to coronavirus restrictions, but he did stay with her on her final night, his spokesman told CNN Tuesday.
