Sinkholes have existed for centuries in Konya, a vast agricultural province known as Türkiye's breadbasket but their numbers have risen in recent years due to increasing drought and a subsequent overuse of groundwater for irrigation, according to experts.

Lake Tuz, Turkey's second-largest lake in Central Anatolia, is in great danger as some parts of the lake have already dried up and the rest of it may be on the brink of extinction in 30 years, an expert has warned.

Lake Akşehir, a tectonic freshwater endorheic lake in Turkey's southwestern province of Konya, has almost dried up due to years of low rainfall and misusage of its water for agricultural purposes.

The 54-square-kilometer lake considerably shrank this year, with a swamp and reeds taking over its coast, along with weeds outgrowing on the shores.
