Latvian poet Amanda Aizpuriete wins Vilenica Prize
Ljubljana – Latvian poet Amanda Aizpuriete is the winner of this year’s International Vilenica Prize for Central European literature, which will be given out during the 37th Vilenica International Literary Festival in Slovenia in September. The Slovenian author in the focus will be Andrej Blatnik, the festival’s organisers told the press on Tuesday.

Ljubljana – The Ljubljana City Library will host this week a series of lectures and other events presenting the rich cultural and natural heritage of Austria and its impact and integration into the common European space as part of the Austrian Culture Week.
Parliamentary body endorsees changes in education
Ljubljana – The parliamentary Education Committee endorsed late on Friday amendments to the organisation and financing of education act, which would change the composition of school and kindergarten councils to increase the influence of the founder, as members of the opposition obstructed.

Literary historian Boris Paternu dies
Trieste – Slovenian literary historian and academician Boris Paternu died in the Italian city of Trieste at the age of 95 on Friday, the Primorski Dnevnik newspaper reported. His expertise was Slovenian literature of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, while he also extensively studied the poetry of Slovenia’s greatest poet France Prešeren.

Call for measures to address remote schooling ramifications
Ljubljana – Remote schooling has taken a toll on parents, particularly mothers, and primary school children who have been struggling due to stress, exhaustion and lack of motivation, shows a study by the March 8 Institute. Some 150 scholars, mostly specialists in Central and Southeast Europe, from different parts of the world, have signed a petition expressing concern about the autonomy of scholars and academic freedom in Slovenia and about the Slovene government's alleged "attempt to take control of important cultural and academic institutions".
Traces of samurai on Slovenian soil to be explored at Metelkova
The exhibition on Japanese weapons and the warrior culture on the Slovenian soil will showcase museum exhibits as well as pieces from private collections.
Some 50 select pieces of Japanese weapons and protective gear, including state-of-the-art swords and a rare gem, a fully preserved samurai armour, will be on display until 5 November.
