It has been 50 years since the founding declaration of New Democracy on October 4, 1974. The declaration was signed solely by Konstantinos Karamanlis, just two and a half months after his return to Greece, following 11 years of self-imposed “exile” in Paris. Thus, the party was established, which, along with PASOK, became the two main pillars of the post-dictatorial Greek Republic.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday welcomed a European Commission report showing that value-added tax evasion in Greece had already dropped by about half, in a post on social media. 

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis continues his efforts to lure back the part of the electorate that voted for New Democracy in 2019 but had become alienated as a result of issues that range from the high cost of living and a perceived inability to listen to the average person, to the wiretapping cases and, lately, the rail tragedy at Tempe.

With a large segment of the media and analysts convinced that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will call early elections in 2022, attention has turned toward the battle for centrist voters.

Greek conservative opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday expressed his confidence that European voters will turn their back on "the lies and populism" in the upcoming European Parliament elections.
