A strong earthquake of magnitude 8.1 has struck in the Pacific off the southern coast of Mexico, killing at least three people, reported BBC. 

The epicentre was about 87km (54 miles) south-west of the town of Pijijiapan and at a depth of 70km, the United States Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning has been issued for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras.

President Trump on Wednesday expressed his support to the governors of Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, who govern areas that are bracing for the impending Hurricane Irma, The Hill reports.

Crews overwhelmed by thousands of rescue calls during one of the heaviest downpours in U.S. history have had little time to search for other potential victims, but officials acknowledge the grim reality that fatalities linked to Harvey could soar once the devastating floodwaters recede from one of America’s most sprawling metropolitan centers.

Floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey are likely to rise as more torrential rain pounds the U.S. Gulf Coast, where at least eight people have already been killed in Texas and tens of thousands driven from their homes, officials have said.

More than 30,000 people will need shelter as a result of the unrelenting rains and flooding of Tropical Storm Harvey overwhelming Texas, reported USA Today. 

By the time Hurricane Harvey was downgraded to a Category 1 storm early Saturday, it had already delivered a 1-2 punch to the Gulf Coast of Texas, making landfall twice, with powerful wind gusts and the threat of catastrophic flooding.

It was still threatening to be the most powerful storm to hit the Lone Star State in more than a decade.
