Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan told reporters yesterday that he was going to have a “final meeting” with President Abdullah Gül before deciding on the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AK Parti) official candidate for the elections, the first round of which will be held on Aug. 10.

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has been having a hard time since the announcement of Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu as a joint candidate for the presidential election in August.

Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel visited President Haşim Kılıç of the Constitutional Court on June 24.

Sources said the meeting was scheduled before the delivery of the top Court’s ruling concerning the Balyoz coup case convicts.

Still, Özel expressed his “extreme pleasure” over the ruling during his meeting with Kılıç, the same sources said.

Twenty-five suspects in the Balyoz (Sledgehammer) coup plot case were acquitted by Istanbul’s 4th Heavy Penal Court on June 24, less than a week after the Constitutional Court ordered a retrial of all 230 convicts.

The court also ruled that the files of the other 63 former convicts who stood in the retrial would be further assessed in future sessions.

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Istanbul deputy Engin Alan, a Balyoz convict who was released from prison last week, has taken his oath at Parliament, almost three years after being elected as a member of Parliament in June 2011.
