7.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off Peru, tsunami threat issued

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of central Peru on Friday, the United States Geological Survey said, with tsunami waves expected along some coastlines.

The USGS said the tremor hit 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) from Atiquipa district, raising an initial magnitude rating soon after the quake was reported.

An undersea earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck in the South Pacific on Monday, sending small tsunami waves towards New Caledonia and Vanuatu, british Daily Telegraph writes. The quake, initially reported as magnitude 7.3, struck 51 miles east of the Loyalty Islands and was the second major tremor in the same area in less than 24 hours and the third in the past month.

6.4 magnitude earthquake hits New Caledonia

An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck in the Pacific Ocean, 74 kilometres (46 miles) east of the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said on Sunday.
The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.6, struck at 8:25 pm in the evening (0925 GMT) at a shallow depth of 13.0 km, the USGS said.

A big 7.3 magnitude earthquake strikes between Philippines and Indonesia

 

The 7.3-magnitude quake was measured at a depth of 380 miles (617 km) at 2:13′ pm local time. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) the quake struck in the centre of the Celebes Sea, off Sulu.

 

An aftershock of 4,9 magnitude was recorded 12 minutes later.

 

6.5 magnitude earthquake hits Tonga in Pacific Ocean

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude struck 572 kilometres (355 miles) beneath the earth’s surface on Friday about 340 kilometres west of the South Pacific island nation of Tonga, the United States Geological Survey reported. There was no indication of a tsunami warning according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. The temblor was revised down from an initial reading of 6.5.

Powerful 7.8 quake shakes Japan

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Japanese coast Saturday, geologists said, shaking buildings in Tokyo and setting off car alarms, an AFP correspondent reported.
 
Despite the huge power of the quake, there was no risk of a tsunami, The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported.
