Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday declined to rule out giving another prime-ministerial mandate to his close ally, Florian Citu, whose cabinet was ousted on Tuesday in a no-confidence motion.

Asked on Wednesday if Citu could be proposed again as PM, Iohannis replied that anyone who obtains a majority in parliament could be appointed.

The government of Prime Minister Florin Citu of the National Liberal Party, PNL was toppled on Tuesday after a large majority of MPs backed a no-confidence motion filed last week by the main opposition Social Democratic Party, PSD.

In a tight contest, Prime Minister Florin Citu will battle ex-Prime Minister and current head of Romania's Chamber of Deputies, Ludovic Orban, for the leadership of the centre-right National Liberal Party, PNL at a party congress on Saturday.

The co-chair of the Save Romania Union - Party of Liberty, Unity and Solidarity (USR PLUS) Dan Barna stated on Monday that, at the moment of establishing the governing coalition, Florin Citu seemed to be "a reforming Prime Minister", closer to Romania's need for change.

Prime Minister Florin Citu said on Thursday that the immunization campaign must be sped up and payments will be made for staff at vaccination centers, adding that he will maintain the programs approved by Save Romania Union - Party of Liberty, Unity and Solidarity (USR PLUS), such as the lottery or other methods to encourage vaccination.

The President of the Senate, Anca Dragu (Save Romania Union - Party of Liberty, Unity and Solidarity; USR PLUS), believes the decision of the Joint Standing Bureaus to postpone the debate and vote on the censure motion until after the decision of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) is not founded on any article of the Constitution.

The chairman of PNL (National Liberal Party) Ludovic Orban considers that the only solution for overcoming the political and governmental crisis in Romania is restoring the governing coalition that was formed after the 2020 parliamentary elections.

President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday took note of the USR PLUS (Save Romania Union - Party of Liberty, Unity and Solidarity alliance) ministers' resignations and signed the decrees on the acting ministers' nomination, the Presidential Administration informs.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) considers that the quickest solution for ceasing the political and governmental crisis is for president Klaus Iohannis to exercise his constitutional role of mediator and to request the urgent resignation of Prime Minister Florin Citu.
