Woman Takes Over Romania's Opposition Liberals

The National Liberal Party, PNL, Romania's biggest opposition party, elected Alina Gorghiu as its new leader on Thursday, replacing Klaus Iohannis, who resigned as head of the PNL to become President of Romania.

She won 48 votes in an internal meeting of party leaders. Her main opponent, a former Transport Minister, Ludovic Orban, got 28 votes.

President Traian Basescu on Wednesday signed a decree appointing Social Democrat Darius Valcov as minister-delegate for budget. On Aug. 19, 2014, Prime Minister Victor Ponta confirmed having submitted to President Basescu his proposal for the appointment of Darius Valcov as minister-delegate for budget.

Presidential candidate Iohannis: Pre-campaign starts on Tuesday

The candidate of the Christian Liberal Alliance (ACL, made up of National Liberal Party PNL and Democratic Liberal Party PDL) Klaus Iohannis announced on Monday night the start of his pre-campaign for Romania's presidency, with collection of the mandatory signatures of voters to allow him running.
