A regional election authority in the northeastern city of Ardahan has decided to annul the recent elections in the city and call for a renewal following objections from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The Supreme Election Council (YSK) has decided to grant the certificate of the election to the winning candidate from the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in the eastern province of Van, accepting the appeal by the party against an earlier ruling that overturned the election win.

The mayorship of the Van Municipality has been handed over to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) as the provincial election board ruled that the winner, Abdullah Zeydan from the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), lacked the eligibility to run in the election.

The Supreme Election Council (YSK) has announced the unconfirmed results of Türkiye's local elections held on March 31, revealing the participation rate standing at 78 percent.

Polling for Türkiye's local elections concludes, and the counting process begins, with over 61 million voters eligible to vote in the country's 81 provinces.

Voting in the 32 eastern provinces started at 7 a.m. local time and ended at 4 p.m. Polls in the remaining provinces opened at 8 a.m. and closed at 5 p.m.

"We have preserved our country's full potential while bolstering it across all fronts," Erdoğan said during a rally in the central province of Konya on March 17.

His remarks come ahead of the upcoming local elections slated for March 31.
