“Government’s handling of economic crisis brought the country to a worse state than previous situation”

Both top opposition leaders, center-right New Democracy’s (ND) president Vangelis Meimarakis and centrist Potami party leader Stavros Theodorakis warned this week against snap elections in the country.
Crisis-plagued Greece last held elections in January, with leftist SYRIZA taking power in a coalition with the rightist-populist Independent Greeks’ (AN.EL) party.

Greece’s Parliament has authorized the SYRIZA government to sign an agreement with creditors and avert a meltdown of the country’s eurozone membership, with an unprecedented early morning vote drawing cross-party support for a deal.

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras was received by the country’s president on Wednesday, immediately after he returned from a tumultuous two days in Brussels and Strasbourg — where, amongst others, he was served with an ultimatum by creditors to achieve a bailout deal.

Main opposition New Democracy and socialist PASOK are reportedly considering tabling a no confidence vote in Parliament against the SYRIZA-led coalition government, a move that would delay and endanger the holding of a referendum for July 5.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Tuesday Athens was seeking a viable, long-term deal that would pull the country out of economic crisis but faced a deadlock with creditors over debt restructuring.

The leader of Greece's centrist To Potami party called on Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday to reach a deal with the country's creditors and said his party was ready to back in parliament any agreement which kept Greece in the euro zone.

Opposition leaders reacted to Sunday’s abrupt end of negotiations in Brussels between the Greek government and creditors, with New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras referring to a “threat” entailed with a Eurozone exit and a return to a national currency.

“We’ll have a chat with those who cover-up for rapists another time,” was the eyebrow-raising phrase used by the leader of the centrist Potami party on Friday during an off-the-agenda party leaders’ debate, sending shock waves through the legislature.

Opposition party leaders in Greece heaped more criticism on the ruling radical leftist SYRIZA government over the weekend, as the latter was holding a “soul-searching” central committee meeting with opinions vacillating between “pain compromises” with creditors, to uncompromising “rift”.
