One of Russia's most active volcanoes erupted on Tuesday, spewing a huge cloud of ash far into the sky and smothering villages in gray volcanic dust, prompting an aviation alert around Russia's far-eastern Kamchatka peninsula, Reuters reported.

Well-preserved Ice Age woolly rhino found in Siberia
A well-preserved Ice Age woolly rhino with many of its internal organs still intact has been recovered from permafrost in Russia's extreme north.
Russian media reported on Dec. 30 that the carcass was revealed by melting permafrost in Yakutia in August. Scientists are waiting for ice roads in the Arctic region to become passable to deliver it to a lab for studies next month.

The Shiveluch Volcano of Kamchatka has ejected a pylon of ash 11 kilometers above sea level, TASS reportedly referring to Russian vulcanologists. The announcement is made by scientists from the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Group of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismic Activity of the Far Eastern Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
