Number of illegal crossings of border up three-fold
The Slovenian police processed a total of 15,456 cases of illegal crossings of the border in the first five months of the year, which is three times more than in the same period in 2022. The top countries of origin of the illegal migrants were Afghanistan, Morocco and Russia.
Illegal migration keeps surging
Slovenian police handled 8,133 cases of migrants crossing into the country illegally in the first quarter of the year, more than four times the figure recorded in the same period last year. However, even as the number of those indicating their plan to apply for asylum rose, the number of those who actually applied dropped year-on-year.

Police bees fly out to gather nectar in Maribor park
The first Slovenian police bees flew out to gather nectar and pollen in the Maribor City Park after the rooftop of the city's police headquarters provided a new home to four bee colonies.
A small ceremony, featuring a police brass band, was held on 11 April to inaugurate the beehive on top of the police building adjacent to the City Park.
Illegal migrations up almost fourfold in first two months
In the first two months of 2023 Slovenian police processed 5,162 foreigners who crossed the national border illegally, which is almost four times more than in the same period of 2022. The largest source country was Afghanistan, accounting for a fifth of the total, the latest police statistics show.
Slovenia records tripling of illegal migrations in 2022
Slovenian police caught 32,042 illegal migrants on the border last year, an increase of 214% on the year before and the highest figure since the migration crisis in 2015, largely due to a huge influx of persons from Afghanistan, Burundi, India, Pakistan and Russia.
International drug cartel dismantled
An international drug cartel that has been active mainly in Slovenia and Austria, but also in Italy and further afield, has been dismantled by the Slovenian police in cooperation with the Austrian law enforcement authorities.

AMBER Alert launched in Slovenia to help find missing children
Roughly 500 people are reported missing in Slovenia each year, about 30% of them are minors. Finding them will now be made easier with the help an alert system launched by the US tech giant Meta in cooperation with the Slovenian police. Slovenia is only the 30th country in the world to use the AMBER Alert tool.
Number of illegal migrants more than doubles to 15,500 in Jan-Sept
Slovenian police intercepted a total of 15,590 illegal migrants in the January-September period, a rise of 115% from the same nine-month period last year. Police statistics show that Afghanistan citizens accounted for the largest single group of illegal migrants – 2,691 of the total.
Syrian pulled over with a vanload of illegal migrants
Maribor – A van with Austrian licence plates and driven by a Syrian citizen was transporting 17 illegal migrants when pulled over by Slovenian police on the motorway in Pomurje, north-east, on Tuesday on suspicion of transporting illegal migrants.
Slovenia has not yet detected security threats due to Ukraine war
Prague – Interior Minister Tanja Bobnar attended an informal EU ministerial in Prague on Monday, telling her colleagues from the other EU members that the Slovenian police had not yet detected major security threats stemming from the war in Ukraine. However, the police is paying close attention including because of potential human trafficking.
