No jail time for municipal engineer who took €10,000 kickback

A municipal engineer who accepted a 10,000-euro kickback in return for issuing a building progress report has been handed a three-year suspended sentence by a Thessaloniki court.

The court found him guilty of bribery but acquitted him on another charge of attempted extortion. It also accepted his lack of a prior criminal record as a mitigating factor. 

Three schoolboys convicted for trying to sell nude images of female classmate

A Thessaloniki court has found three youths guilty of possessing nude photos and videos of a 14-year-old girl and of trying to sell them to classmates for five euros a piece.

The trio, who are all minors, were ordered to be placed under the supervision of social workers for six months.

Man gets suspended sentence for entering neighbors’ properties to smell their shoes

A judge in northern Greece on Thursday imposed a suspended one-month prison sentence on a man convicted of disturbing his neighbors by repeatedly sneaking into their properties to smell their shoes.

The 28-year-old Greek man told the Thessaloniki court that he was unable to explain his behavior, which, he said, had caused him great embarrassment.

Historic Greek winemaker files for bankruptcy

Historic winemaker Tsantalis has filed for bankruptcy, with the hearing at a Thessaloniki court in northern Greece being scheduled for October 11. 

The company is also seeking a date for the termination of its payments. 

The president of the union representing workers at the company, Sakis Kalligas, stressed that Tsantalis has halted its production since August 2023. 

Wife beater let off with suspended sentence by Thessaloniki court

A man who was convicted of beating his wife was let off by a Thessaloniki court on Wednesday with a two-year jail sentence that he can pay off at a fee of 10 euros a day, without serving any time behind bars.

The 37-year-old man was arrested on an expedited warrant after his wife reported the attack to the police as soon as it happened.

Suspended sentence for landlord who spied on tenant with camera

A Thessaloniki court has handed a landlord a three-year suspended sentence for secretly recording a female tenant using a hidden camera in her apartment.

The case came to light in November 2019, when the then 18-year-old student filed a complaint.

Although the apartment was intended for short-term rental, the landlord had agreed to rent it to her for a year.

Thessaloniki court oversees investigation into assault against LGBT individuals

The nine adults out of 21 arrested for attacking two transgender individuals late on Saturday were released after being presented before the first instance court in the northern port city of Thessaloniki on Monday. 

The Thessaloniki court postponed the trial due to the absence of witnesses.
