Seventeen Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants were "neutralized" in northern Syria have been over the last 24 hours as part of the Euphrates Shield Operation, the Turkish military said early on Jan. 18.

Turkish authorities use the word "neutralized" in their statements to imply that the militants in question were either killed or captured.        

At least 20 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants have been killed in northern Syria over the last 24 hours as part of the ongoing Euphrates Shield operation, according to a Turkish General Staff statement early on Jan. 17.

The total number of the "neutralized" militants in northern Syria since the ongoing Turkey-led Operation Euphrates Shield was launched last Aug., is at least 2,085, according to the latest data of the Turkish military. 

1,775 of these neutralized are ISIL militants, the weekly statement of the Turkish general staff said. 

The Syrian regime should conduct a military offensive in the al-Bab region instead of the Turkish army, according to Iran, a Turkish diplomat has told the Hürriyet Daily News.

A full withdrawal of Turkish troops from Turkish Cyprus is "out of the question," President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Jan. 13, one day after the five-party conference over Cyprus ended without agreement but with a plan for officials to reconvene on Jan. 18 to tackle the thorny security question.

Two suicide bombers along with three other members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) were caught while trying to illegally cross the border from Syria to Turkey, Doğan News Agency reported on Jan. 7.

According to a statement issued by the Turkish General Staff, fighter jets carried out the airstrikes in the Qandil region of northern Iraq on Jan. 6 between 6:58 and 7:55 p.m. (3:58 and 4:55 p.m. GMT).
