Turkish companies ready to process Russian grain: Association

Türkiye's flour companies are ready to handle the Russian grain to be sent to African nations if the plan goes through, say representatives from the industry.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last week paid a one-day visit to Sochi to hold talks on reviving the key grain deal with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

At least 10 people were injured on Monday after an explosion rocked grain silos near the Marmara Sea port of Derince in western Turkey, Turkish state broadcaster TRT and other local media reported, citing Reuters.

It is unclear why an explosion occurred around 2:40 p.m. local time near the Turkish Grain Board silos, with police investigating, TRT said.

Hazelnut production seen at 718,000 tons

Türkiye's hazelnut production is expected to be around 717,931 tons this year, according to the Union of Turkish Agricultural Chambers (TZOB).

Türkiye is the world's largest producer of hazelnut.

"The survey conducted in 16 provinces showed that the hazelnut production will be slightly lower in 2023 from last year," said Arslan Soydan from the TZOB.

Producers want wheat, barley to be purchased more

In a positive move for farmers, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced the purchase price for barley and wheat that farmers have long been waiting for.

"Our producers will receive 9,250 liras per ton for bread wheat and 7,500 liras per ton for barley," President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said following a cabinet meeting on June 6.

Gov’t mulls new measures to help low-income groups

The government is working on new measures that are designed to support low-income groups, Treasury and Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati has said.

"We have already taken steps to help civil servants, workers and low-income groups. New measures are on the way," Nebati told at a meeting with members of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the province of Isparta.
