US Embassy in Bulgaria

The US embassy in Bulgaria has extended its congratulations on today's special holiday. "Happy May 24, Happy Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture, and of Slavic literature," the message begins.

Bulgaria has crowned not one, but two Spelling Bee champions this year. Anton Markov from Ruse, a sixth-grader, and Sava Troanski from Pazardzhik, a fourth-grader, emerged as finalists in the prestigious English-language competition, reported BTA.

The US Embassy in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Embassy in the United States marked the New Year with a harmonious gesture—a joint video greeting sent by Ambassadors Kenneth Merten and Georgi Panayotov.

The US Embassy in Bulgaria issued a statement on the delay in the delivery of the new F-16 fighters.

The embassy said the F-16 production program was delayed due to supply disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This will affect all countries currently participating in this program.

The United States is deeply concerned by statements by Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, in which he describes Crimea as "Russian". This is stated in a statement issued by the US Embassy in Bulgaria.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned three Bulgarian individuals for their extensive roles in corruption in Bulgaria, as well as their networks encompassing 64 entities, the US Embassy in Bulgaria announced on June 2.

"United against COVID-19" will support projects that assist vulnerable groups affected by the crisis, including medical staff, people with disabilities, the elderly, children, minorities, the homeless, the unemployed, single parents and others, the US Embassy in Bulgaria reported.

Today Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria Herro Mustafa met to discuss efforts underway in both countries to address the coronavirus epidemic and additional U.S. Embassy-supported initiatives to assist Bulgaria during the state of emergency.

Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov today.  Secretary Pompeo congratulated Bulgaria on its quick actions to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases, and the two discussed further efforts to mitigate this crisis. 

Sofia International Film Festival is the biggest film festival in Bulgaria. It began in 1997 and attracts more than 85 000 spectators annually. The festival aims to present the best of the contemporary cinema to local audiences and regional Bulgarian and Balkan cinema to international audiences, as well as to encourage cooperation between local and international filmmakers.
