Nearly 15,000 Syrians receiving education in Turkish universities

Nearly 15,000 Syrians are enrolled in Turkish universities as of the 2016-2017 academic year, Higher Education Board (YÖK) head Yekta Saraç has said. 

One thirds of Syrian university students are women and the rest are men, while 3,473 Syrian students in the country are receiving education as a part of the special "Turkey Scholarship" program, Saraç added.

Van cats implanted with chips to maintain bloodline

Experts at a university center in the eastern province of Van are attempting to preserve the famous Van cat breed by implementing a new chip system that will facilitate the tracking and maintenance of the all-white felines.

The Van Cat Track System was initiated last year by the Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYU) Van Cat Research and Application Center to ensure the cats' pedigree.

2,800-year-old Urartian sewage system unearthed in Van

An ancient Urartian sewage system, which was first discovered during excavations in 2004 in the Çavuştepe Castle in the eastern province of Van, has been unearthed. 

This year's works in the castle in the Gürpınar district of Van recently came to an end, after unearthing ancient vineyards, walls, cisterns, temples and palace structures.

Local residents and officials have been mobilized to save a stray cat from the under the hood of a car in eastern Turkey. A local man named Nurullah Kurman discovered that a cat was stuck near the engine of his car on Dec. 16, after having difficulty controlling his vehicle while driving home in the southeastern province of Van.
