A special parliamentary session to address the status of jailed former deputy Can Atalay ended in chaos on Aug. 16, with a brawl breaking out that left several lawmakers injured.

The session, held despite parliament being in recess, was convened after the Constitutional Court declared that the annulment of Atalay's parliamentary status was invalid.

Opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) lawmaker and investigative journalist Ahmet Şık announced his resignation from the party on May 4.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has filed a lawsuit against Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) deputy Ahmet Şık for "insulting" the party during a speech he delivered on July 23 when parliament discussed a contentious anti-terror bill.

An Istanbul court on March 9 has ordered the release of journalist Ahmet Şık and editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu in the Cumhuriyet case.

A judge ordered journalist Ahmet Şık to be removed from the courtroom on Dec. 25, preventing him from making a “political statement” in his defense during the fifth hearing of the trial Cumhuriyet journalists held at Istanbul’s Çağlayan Courthouse. 

The Turkish government has claimed that prominent imprisoned Cumhuriyet reporter Ahmet Şık was not arrested for his journalistic activities, in its defense submitted to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Nov. 27.

The third hearing in the Cumhuriyet trial, in which 20 executives and journalists from the critical Turkish newspaper are being tried, including editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu, reporter Ahmet Şık, columnist Kadri Gürsel and cartoonist Musa Kart, began on Sept. 25 at Istanbul's Çağlayan Courthouse.
