Greek manufacturing activity climbs to a nine-year high

Growth in Greek manufacturing activity accelerated in August for the third consecutive month as rising demand at home and abroad led firms to add jobs and increase production, a survey showed Friday. Markit's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing, which accounts for about 10 percent of the economy, rose to 52.2 from 50.5 in July, its highest print since August 2008.

Greek manufacturing activity expanded in July for the second straight month, driven by a rise in staffing numbers and output, a survey showed on Tuesday.

Markit's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing, which accounts for about 10 percent of the economy, stood at 50.5 in July, unchanged from June. Readings above 50 denote expansion in activity.

Greek manufacturing activity contracted in April for the eighth month in a row as a marked decline in new business led to production cuts and job cuts, a survey showed on Tuesday.

Markit's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing, which accounts for about 10 percent of the economy, rose to 48.2 from 46.7 in March. Readings below 50 denote contractions in activity.
