In the wake of revelations that a huge burial mound being excavated at Ancient Amphipolis, northern Greece, has no fourth chamber, the Culture Ministry’s general secretary Lina Mendoni indicated that the central tomb could be located beneath the level on which the dig is currently taking place and did not rule out the possibility that the tomb had been raided.

Excavation work at the site of Ancient Amphipolis, in central Macedonia, has revealed a mosaic of random while marble pieces against a red background, the Ministry of Culture has said.

Archaeologists excavating a large burial mound in northern Greece have asked politicians and others seeking guided tours of the site to leave them in peace.

The Culture Ministry appealed for «understanding» Thursday while the Amphipolis excavation proceeds.

State archaeologists on Wednesday continued their painstaking work at the site of Ancient Amphipolis, in central Macedonia, removing large stones from the entrance to a huge tomb there and revealing two headless sphinxes believed to have been placed there to guard the massive burial site.
