Banks ready to start funding shipping again, says NBG chief

National Bank of Greece chief executive Alexandros Tourkolias on Wednesday confirmed Greek banks return to the financing of the shipping industry.

Top National Bank of Greece officials expressed optimism on Friday that the country will emerge from the financial crisis and certainty that Greek banks will grow stronger following the European stress tests.

Greeces biggest lender by assets, National Bank (NBG), reported higher-than-expected profit in the first quarter, helped by lower funding costs, its Turkish unit Finansbank and reduced provisions for bad loans.
The group posted net earnings of 181 million euros in January to March, its sixth straight profitable quarter.
