Iranian-allied Houthi fighters in Yemen accepted on May 10 a five-day humanitarian ceasefire proposed by adversary Saudi Arabia but warned they would respond to any violations.
   
Neighbouring Saudi Arabia had said on May 9 that the ceasefire could begin on May 12 if the Houthi militia agreed to the pause.

Planes from a Saudi-led coalition struck Yemeni provinces near the Saudi border May 5 night, killing at least 43 civilians, Houthi sources said, as 22 aid agencies warned that fuel shortages could halt their work.

A Saudi-led coalition pressed on with air strikes April 29 against Shiite rebels in south Yemen where fierce clashes raged between the insurgents and southern pro-government fighters, sources said.

Saudi Arabia pledged April 18 to cover the entire $274 million in humanitarian aid sought by the UN for conflict-torn Yemen, which has also been the target of Saudi-led air strikes against Shiite rebels.
  

The UN Security Council will vote on April 14 on a draft resolution that demands Yemen's Huthi rebels pull back and punishes them with an arms embargo and sanctions, diplomats said.

Saudi-led air strikes hit a rebel base in central Yemen on April 12 and clashes raged in southern city Aden as France's top diplomat voiced Western support for the air campaign in Riyadh.

Serbian citizen "trapped" in Yemen

BELGRADE -- Serbian citizen Muhedin Gegic and his Yemeni wife and four children are "trapped" in the Middle Eastern country, according to Serbia's state broadcaster RTS.

Gegic told RTS that he was in daily contact with the Serbian embassy in Dubai, that he "awaits evacuation, and thinks all that will soon be resolved."

The United States will not stand by while Iran provides support to Shiite rebels who have seized much of Yemen, Secretary of State John Kerry said on April 8.
      
"There have been -- there are, obviously -- flights coming from Iran. Every single week there are flights from Iran and we've traced it and know this," Kerry told PBS television in an interview.
      

More than 100,000 people in Yemen have left their homes in search of safety and at least 74 children have been killed since fighting in the country intensified almost two weeks ago, the U.N. children's agency said.
