UN Climate Conference in Glasgow Began with a Minute of Silence for COVID-19 Victims

The inaugural UN climate conference in Glasgow is the last chance to limit global warming to less than one and a half degrees Celsius. This was stated in his opening speech by the chairman of the conference Alok Sharma. COP26 began with a minute of silence in memory of the Covid-19 victims.

Sturgeon says Scottish independence vote likely if she wins election

Scottish nationalist leader Nicola Sturgeon said a second referendum on independence was "more likely than not" in the next five years if she wins an election on May 5 as polls predict. 

The pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) had said  it would not press for another vote on independence until it was clear most Scots wanted to leave the United Kingdom. 

Putin Needs 'Phone Call' to End War in Syria, UK's Hammond Says

It is Russian President Vladimir Putin who can bring the civil war in Syria to an end, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has said.

It will depend on "whether the Russians are prepared to use their influence" to remove Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the Independent quotes him as saying on The Andrew Marr Show.
