New EU chiefs visit Kiev on first day of mandate

The EU's new top diplomat Kaja Kallas and head of the European Council Antonio Costa arrived in Kiev on Sunday in a symbolic show of support for Ukraine on their first day in office.

"We came to give a clear message that we stand with Ukraine, and we continue to give our full support," Costa told media outlets accompanying them on the trip.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with the newly elected President of the European Council Antonio Costa, at Maximos Mansion, in Athens, on Tuesday.

"It is a pleasure for me to welcome you, dear António, and I want to wish you all the best in the duties you will undertake," Mitsotakis said to Costa.

EU Leaders Back von der Leyen for Second Term

EU leaders have nominated German Ursula von der Leyen for a second five-year term as president of the European Commission. At the Brussels summit, which concluded last night, they also selected Portugal's Antonio Costa as president of the European Council, and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas will serve as the EU's new high representative for foreign policy.
