Vote counting was underway in India's election Tuesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi all but assured a triumph for his Hindu nationalist agenda that has thrown the opposition into disarray and deepened concerns for minority rights.

India locked down its capital New Delhi for a week beginning on April 19 night seeking to control a raging coronavirus outbreak, as the hard-hit United States made all adults eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

More than a million private cars were banned from New Delhi's roads on Jan. 1, as authorities began testing drastic new measures to cut smog in the world's most polluted capital.

For 15 days from Jan. 1, private cars will only be allowed on the city's roads every other day to try to reduce pollutant levels, which regularly hit 10 times the World Health Organization's safe limits.
