Athanasia, Marilena and Adamantia leaned carefully over the laboratory equipment. They were completing the final experiments before closing the envelope for the competition. From there, the three students and the rest of the team would travel to Paris and the iGEM international synthetic biology competition to present their groundbreaking idea: Can certain probiotics cure depression?

Australia is often held up as the paradigm for a multicultural society. Especially the Greek Diaspora has managed to integrate well and thrive in the land ‘down under’. However, the story of two young Greek girls is a reminder that sometimes following the letter of the law is not the most humane course of action.

The Guardian asked 100 Greeks what they would vote for and why on the country’s Sunday referendum. Angelino, a university student will vote “No” explaining that after 5 months of talks with Greece’s EU partners the Greek government has nothing more to negotiate. Katerina, a chemist will force herself to vote “Yes” as she says.
