The former president of a top-division soccer team in Turkey told a court on Tuesday that he regretted attacking a referee at the end of a league game but denied threatening to kill him.

The recent shocking assault on referee Halil Umut Meler on the pitch by a former club president and the subsequent series of violent incidents have prompted sports writer Uğur Meleke to advocate for a radical package of measures to address the pervasive chaos and violence in Turkish football.

The Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) unanimously has decided on the principle of "appropriate language" to prevent insulting and slanderous statements in sports broadcasts.

The Turkish Football Federation has permanently banned the former president of a Turkish football team who punched a referee on the field moments after a game.

The federation late on Dec. 14 said it banned Faruk Koca, who has resigned as president of MKE Ankaragücü, for punching referee Halil Umut Meler on Dec. 11 night.

Türkiye's football leagues will resume on Dec. 19, ending a brief suspension caused by a violent attack on a referee, the federation has announced.

A new Turkish women's football league is set to start the 2021-2022 season, Turkish Football Federation (TFF) said on Sept. 21. 

TFF said important decisions were made regarding the restructuring of women's leagues during a summit on Sept. 20.

Defending champions Beşiktaş started the 2021-2022 Turkish Süper Lig season on Aug. 13 with a 3-0 win over Çaykur Rizespor.

Beşiktaş took control of the match at the beginning, with Georges-Kevin Nkoudou scoring the early opener in the 9th minute, assisted by Kenan Karaman at Vodafone Park.

Beşiktaş striker Cyle Larin netted four goals in Jan. 6's evening's Turkish Süper Lig game to lead the Black-Eagles to a 6-0 win over Çaykur Rizespor.

Playing at Istanbul's Vodafone Park stadium, Larin scored the opener in the 19th minute.

In minute 31, The Black-Eagles doubled the lead when Canadian forward Larin scored another goal, the first half ended 2-0.

Croatian footballer Dario Melnjak feels safe in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic as he waits for the Turkish Süper Lig season to resume.

"Turkey was better and safer for me and my family. Right now, we are all just waiting for the news, waiting to learn when we will start training again," he said in an interview with Anadolu Agency on May 9.
