Turkey marks 6 years since death of Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi

Turkey on Sept. 2 marked six years since the body of 3-year-old Syrian boy Aylan Kurdi washed ashore, making headlines worldwide and becoming a symbol of the refugee crisis from the war in Syria.

The toddler had been on board a boat carrying 14 irregular migrants, five of whom died when it sank.

Two suspected human smugglers being tried by a Turkish court over the death of several migrants - including toddler Aylan Kurdi, whose drowning shocked the world last year - have accused the father of the Syrian toddler of being human smuggler and using the boat at time of the incident.

Two alleged people-smugglers are on trial in Turkey accused of causing the death of 3-year-old Syrian migrant boy Aylan Kurdi and four other people.

The image of the boy - his lifeless body lying face down on a beach in Bodrum - galvanized world attention on the refugee crisis, graphically illustrating the magnitude of the suffering and the treacherous journeys the migrants risk.
