Russia claims to have Bakhmut but Ukraine says battle not over

Although Russia claims it has won control of Ukraine's eastern city of Bakhmut, after a grinding nine-month conflict in which tens of thousands of fighters have died, top Ukrainian military leaders say the battle is not over.

Ukrainian officials acknowledge they now control only a small part of Bakhmut.

It didn't "fall"?

According to him, fighting is raging around the city administration building, which the Russian paramilitary group Wagner claims raised the Russian flag on.
Cherevaty told Reuters by telephone that Bakhmut is Ukrainian.
"Bakhmut is Ukrainian, they have not taken anything and they are very far from doing so, to put it mildly," said Cherevaty.

Wagner claims 'legal' capture of Ukraine's Bakhmut

Russia's Wagner paramilitary group on Monday claimed it had captured the city hall in Ukraine's eastern town of Bakhmut, giving it "legal" control, but Kiev said its forces still held the town.

The battle for Bakhmut has raged for months with Wagner supporting Russian troops and Ukraine warning the fall of the town would lead to the loss of huge swathes of its territory.
