A man has been arrested by police in Brussels in connection with recent terror attacks in the city, Belgian public broadcaster RTBF reported on Friday.

The suspect, carrying a backpack, was shot and wounded in Schaerbeek suburb of the Belgian capital after refusing to obey police orders. Blasts were also heard during the anti-terror operation.

Six people were arrested on March 24 in a series of police raids in Brussels, federal prosecutors said, two days after jihadist attacks in the Belgian capital left 31 dead.

Europe is on high alert after the deadly attacks at Brussels airport and metro station killing at least 31 people and injuring more than 270, while the terrorists responsible for the attacks are still on the run.

Al-Qaeda's North African branch said its attack on a beach resort in Ivory Coast on March 13 that killed 18 people was revenge for a French offensive against Islamist militants in the Sahel region and called for its forces to withdraw. 

One suspect has been shot dead in a counter-terrorism raid in Brussels linked to last year's terror attacks in Paris in which 130 people were killed, the BBC reported on Tuesday.

As many as two other suspects are reportedly on the run after Belgian police raided an apartment in Forest, a south Brussels suburb, according to the BBC.

A French court gave the state the green light Feb. 25 to raze makeshift tents and lean-tos used by hundreds of migrants at a sprawling slum in Calais, where many dream of slipping into Britain.

Tamping down fears of a violent confrontation, France's interior minister promised to treat the migrants humanely and not send in bulldozers to evict them.

Tens of thousands of Syrians fleeing violence in the war-torn country have amassed on the Turkish border, with more compatriots also expected to head toward the frontier.

Germany will start holding personal hearings for asylum seekers from Syria as of Jan. 1, an Interior Ministry spokeswoman told Reuters on Dec. 31, reversing a policy of granting almost automatic refugee status for Syrians.

France has asked the European Union to improve the detection of fake Syrian passports used by people trying to get into Europe after two of the suicide bombers in the Nov. 13 Paris attacks were found carrying such passports.
