Senior German diplomat Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut was nominated as head of EU delegation to Turkey, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced on June 16 in a statement.

Meyer-Landrut has been Germany's ambassador to France and Monaco since 2015.

He will replace Christian Berger, who continues his career as EU ambassador to Egypt.

According to the UNESCO website, Ani, which is next to Turkey's closed border with Armenia, was the capital of medieval Armenian kingdom of the Bagratides in the 10th century.

The head of the European Union delegation to Turkey ambassador Christian Berger has praised Turkey's efforts to seek a resolution to the Syrian crisis both with and without Iran and Russia, adding that Brussels and Ankara agree on the fundamental principles in the policy on the war-hit country.
