Our interview took place under the gaze of eminent architect and town planner Stamatis Kleanthis, the domineering figure of statesman Constantine Karamanlis, the slender form of Athena and a headless bust of actress Kyveli. On the floor, I see the head of Dionysus Solomos, broken off after a branch fell on the statue in the National Garden.

Friday marks the 36th anniversary of the signing of Greece’s membership in the EEC, the precursor of today’s European Union, by then Greek PM Constantine Karamanlis, the country’s pre-eminent statesman in the second half of the 20th century.

The investigation about an assassination plot code-named "Pythia" against former Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis, which was revealed in 2011, has brought to light new evidence with regard to another unsolved case, the assassination of journalist Sokratis Giolias.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Thursday cast New Democracy as a Europe-oriented party, following leftist SYRIZA?s overture toward the Communist Party (KKE), as the conservative pre-election campaign shifts its focus to the center ground and undecided voters.

Former New Democracy leaders Costas Karamanlis and Constantine Mitsotakis (photo) will take part in the events the party will hold in the next few days to mark the 40th anniversary of its founding, Kathimerini has learned.

Democracy was restored in Greece 40 years ago and the country owes a debt to Constantine Karamanlis for handling the transition and anchoring the country firmly in the safe port of Europe with wisdom and determination.

Numerous mistakes were made in the decades that followed the fall of the 1967-74 military dictatorship – mistakes that ultimately led to the crisis.
