Senate Vice President Robert Cazanciuc on Thursday took over from his Social Democrat colleague the Titus Corlatean the position of Senate President.

The Chamber of Deputies' Speaker, Valeriu Zgonea says it is only the Central Election Bureau (BEC) which could clarify whether additional polling stations can be set abroad for the November 16 runoff.

Corlatean resigned on Monday amid anger over long queues and chaotic scenes when Romanians living abroad tried to cast ballots at the presidential polls on November 2.

His move came after tens of thousands of people protested in cities across the country at the weekend in support of Romanians living abroad who were not able to vote.
