Bulgarian MPs Revive Belene Nuclear Plant Project

The Bulgarian parliament on Thursday voted overwhelmingly in favour of dropping the moratorium on the construction of the Belene Nuclear Power Plant, NPP.

A total of 172 out of 240 MPs supported the proposal by the ruling GERB party of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov which gives Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova the mandate to restart the process of seeking potential investors.

GERB Seeks a Ruling from Constitutional Court in Relation to Istanbul Convention

GERB has filed a petition to the Constitutional Court in order to seek a ruling on whether the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (known as the Istanbul Convention) is consistent with the Constitution or not.

The petition was signed by 75 MPs.

Bulgarian Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee to Review Election System Bill

The Legal Affairs Committee with Bulgaria's Parliament will debate and vote on Tuesday on a bill aimed at a switch to a first-past-the-post electoral system.

The move follows calls from political parties, activist groups, and the national ombudsman to take into consideration a recent referendum.

Bulgaria's Biggest Party to Submit Electoral System Bill Thursday

The biggest parliamentary force, GERB, is to table a bill changing Bulgaria's electoral system from proportional representation voting to majority voting, a lawmaker has said.

The bill is to be reviewed by the Legal Affairs Commitee on Tuesday and then possibly go to Parliament's floor, Focus News Agency quotes Danail Kirilov, who heads the committee, as saying.

Bulgaria's Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee Approves IntMin Reform

Bulgaria's parliamentary legal affairs committee approved at first reading on Wednesday the draft amendments to the Interior Ministry Act.

The amendments were narrowly approved as ten MPs voted in favour, two were against, while seven lawmakers abstained.

Last week, the draft was rejected by the internal security and public order parliamentary committee.
