Singer-songwriter Lavrentis Machairitsas has died aged 63, apparently of heart failure. 

Machairitsas, who had been vacationing at his summer home in the area of Ptelos, Magnisia, was transferred to Volos hospital early on Monday morning and passed away at 6.30 a.m., 

In its 17th outing, the Preveza Jazz Festival gets under way on Friday, May 31, with Austrian act Month of Sundays at 9 p.m., Sweden's Filip Jers Quartet at 10 p.m. and Switzerland's Septeto Internacional at 11 p.m.

The Vassilis Tsitsanis Orchestra, an ensemble formed with the support of the heirs of the great rebetiko master (1915-84), makes its debut at the Athens Concert Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday with a concert of some of the songwriter and bouzouki player's most popular pieces. Acclaimed singers Dimitra Galani and Natassa Bofiliou will accompany the ensemble on vocals. Shows start at 8.30 p.m.

Vocalists Dimitra Galani, Fivos Delivorias and Yiota Nega, accompanied by the Thessaloniki State Orchestra, pay tribute to acclaimed Greek composer Manos Loizos (1937-1982) with a concert of some of his most famous pieces.

Acclaimed Greek singer Dimitra Galani joins forces with young songwriter and performer Efstathios Drakos at the Papagou Garden Theater on Monday, July 3.
